The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has attracted much critical attention since its founding almost two hundred years ago. When a fourteen-year-old lad told that in answer to his heartfelt prayer for guidance about religion he received an open vision in which God the Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ descended to answer his question, "Which church should I join?" It was an honest question, and one that has not grown stale with age, for thousands of honest seekers after Truth plead daily to the Great God of Heaven for His answer to the same petition. The remarkable event was the beginning of a unique Christian denomination that has spread and continues to reach ever further into the countries of the world. Mormonism has changed countless millions of lives, always for the better. The young visionary's name was Joseph Smith, and the the Church he was divinely directed to organise is the aforementioned 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,' also known as 'Mormonism,' and its members as 'Saints,' or 'Mormons.' Some time after his 'First Vision,' Joseph was visited by an angel in his bedroom. The angel said his name was Moroni, and that he had been sent to tell Joseph that God a work for him to do. He also said that a history of some early inhabitants of the Americas had been kept by holy men, or prophets called by God to teach the inhabitants more about God and to prophesy that God was to send a Saviour to redeem the human race, so that humanity could be reconciled to God by means of the infinite atonement of God's only begotten Son Jesus Christ. This 'book,' said Moroni, had been hidden until God deemed it wisdom to reveal it to the world by the hand of his chosen servant, and said that Joseph was that chosen servant. Joseph was shown and later given the ancient record, engraven on plates that 'had the appearance of common gold.' Through the gift and power of God, Joseph translated the plates into English, and the translation was published in autumn of 1829 with the title "The Book of Mormon." [1829], the common religious atmosphere of frontier America required the belief that God no longer spoke to mortals. Nor, they insisted, did God, 'reveal his will to his servants, the prophets,' a position based on the notion that 'the age of revelation and miracles ended when Jesus' Apostles' no longer stood at the head of The Church of Jesus Christ upon the earth.' The widely accepted belief that the heavens were firmly closed and that God had said all that He needed to say when John completed his magnificent Gospel about the fourth year of the second Christian century, powerfully militated against Joseph, whose personal experiences taught him that neither of these positions were justified. Consequently he received much unwelcome attention, criticism, hostile acts, derision, ridicule, as well as rivers of lies that visited every moment part of his young boy's life, leading ultimately to the murder of Joseph and his brother Hyrum at the hands of a mob hundreds strong that stormed the jail at Carthage, Illinois in June 1844 where Smith had surrendered to face a falsely sworn warrant. Here our purpose is to correct false reports raised against Joseph Smith and the church he founded under divine direction, and to expose fictional versions of Mormon history and doctrine. Latter-day Saints, informally referred to as 'Saints' or 'Mormons' have attracted an array of antagonists intent on the destruction of Mormonism and, at times, Mormons. That being so, Mormons are entitled to ask, "What's wrong with Mormonism?" The books, tracts, pamphlets and fliers published these last two centuries would fill a large library. 'Spiritual Warfare', it seems, is exceptionally verbose. However, it should be noted that an Anti-Mormon is not per se a critic of Mormonism, nor anyone holding a different understanding of the teachings and doctrines of the Holy Bible, but refers exclusively to those actively hostile to The Church of the Latter-day Saints, and its members. Being Anti-Mormon is deliberate and an emotional affair, since Anti-Mormons are driven by emotion without reason, and zeal without knowledge. Anti-Mormons, as do all bigots, prefer misinformation over Truth, ignorance above correct information, refuse to acknowledge, or be amended by cogent scholarly rebuttals, fail to perform the simplest degree of honest research, and ask their readers to replace simple and honest faith with a degree of gullibility that is as remarkable as it is objectionable. Despite the pusillanimity of their publications they making vast fortunes each year from tawdry publications seminars, videos, and pamphlets, etc, that their victims much more than the cash for their overpriced 'must have' goods, because in addition to dishonestly promoting their cynical attacks, they steal from them the chance to learn the Truth, to develop True Christian courage, to reach a state of Godly strength, Grace through Truth, and transplant in their place a series of deliberately distorted religiosities, and show that they consider Falsehood of greater worth than God's Truth. All About Mormonism considers some of the most common and damaging falsehoods, and invite you to consider them with an open and unprejudiced mind, in the spirit of honest enquiry. It is our belief that regardless of what you believe about Mormons and Momronism at present, and regardless of whether you might some day be moved upon to "Come Unto Jesus" through Mormonism, the very least you deserve is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. In that same spirit by which Jesus invited the guilleless Nathaniel to witness for himself what Jesus did and what he taught that we welcome you as a friend and as a fellow Christian to "Come and see." We sincerely hope that you will do so. |
