Mr Holding's book, "The Mormon Defenders," sets out to be an expose of How Latter-day Saint Apologists Misinterpret the Bible.' The truth is that it does nothing of the sort. His book is best described as a tossed salad in which he farms for non-LDS writers that disagree with LDS Teachings and sets them out in an essay. Had he labelled his essay, "How other Christians see certain scriptures differently than Latter-day Saint Christians see them," then he would have hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, he does only the equivalent of explaining why beans are not peas, and no one should be surprised at that! Fortunately, I bought his book on a remainder sale so I am not out too much money for my disappointment.
His approach is a bitty one, that does not do more than set out some opinions of LDS writers and then oppose them. It is the common or standard approach by Anti-Mormons and Mr Holding does not surprise us anywhere.
It is unfortunate that he goes to great lengths to detail some historical matters that are at best tangential to Mormon teachings, and does so only to attempt to extricate hm and his fellows from growing body of historians that believe the Bible to be more trustworthy in what it says than many modern non-LDS Christians do. Mr Holding spends far too much time explaining to his readers [?] why the words in the Bible at various key points do not actually mean what we know they mean if we are English speakers reading the Authorised Version of the Holy Bible. I was reminded of a book prize I received for attending Methodist Sunday School as a boy whose authors intent was to explain away the miracles of Jesus. I get the same message from Mr Holding and am just as disappointed.
I find I am not the only one disappointed with Holding's 'research.' A website that seeks to tear down his literary efforts is: http://the-anointed-one.com/exposed.html : I cannot speak to the reliability of this site, but it seems that Robert Turkel, or JP Holding, they are the same person, has upset a lot of people by his abrasive and misanthropical attacks on many common Christian ideas.
